COMMITTEE REPORT

June 3, 1999

S. 872

Introduced by Senator Bauer

S. Printed 6/3/99--H.

Read the first time June 3, 1999.

THE COMMITTEE ON

INVITATIONS AND MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS

To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (S. 872), to request that the Department of Transportation place signs that contain the caption "Historic Downtown Newberry", etc., respectfully

REPORT:

That they have duly and carefully considered the same, and recommend that the same do pass:

RICHARD M. QUINN, JR., for Committee.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION PLACE SIGNS THAT CONTAIN THE CAPTION "HISTORIC DOWNTOWN NEWBERRY" AND THAT INDICATE THE DIRECTION TO THE HISTORIC AREA ON INTERSTATE 26 AT EXITS 72, 74, AND 76.

Whereas, signs on interstate highways benefit the driver who is not familiar with the route or the area; and

Whereas, the Town of Newberry has a historically significant downtown which includes the recently renovated Newberry Opera House as well as many other interesting sites; and

Whereas, the Town of Newberry would benefit from signs on Interstate 26 at the three interchanges which service this part of the State which would indicate to the passing driver that there are historic sites in the town and the direction to travel to the town. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, request the Department of Transportation to place signs that contain the caption "Historic Downtown Newberry" and that indicate the direction to the historic area on Interstate 26 at exits 72, 74, and 76.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
