A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE SUSAN H. BROOKS, DIRECTOR OF INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS AND SERVICES AT THE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, ON BEING NAMED OUTSTANDING FEMALE STATE EMPLOYEE BY THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATE EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION.

Whereas, Susan H. Brooks has been a state employee for 30 years, holding a wide range of positions from administrative assistant to her current position as director of international programs and services at the Medical University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Susan H. Brooks has given endlessly to MUSC, counseling international students on immigration and visa matters, establishing an English as a Second Language program and a World Affairs Discussion program, and coordinating Medical Spanish and Basic Spanish programs; and

Whereas, Susan H. Brooks has also served MUSC as its representative in immigration matters with the U.S. Department of Justice and as community liaison to ethnic community organizations; and

Whereas, Susan H. Brooks has been honored twice in the last year for her exceptional service to the MUSC as the recipient of the MUSC Applause Recognition Award and as the 1998 state employee of the year for the Charleston area South Carolina State Employees Association; and

Whereas, Susan H. Brooks increased MUSC's membership in the SCSEA by 200 percent and has held a legion of offices in the SCSEA at the state and local level, serving as membership chairman, vice-president and president of the Charleston chapter and as a state board member; and

Whereas, Susan H. Brooks is a member of the Emmaus Community of the St. Mark United Methodist Church and works with many community organizations including the India Association of Greater Charleston, the Tri-County Hispanic Association and the Russian Association of Charleston, YWCA-Charleston, Trident Literacy Association and the Interfaith Crisis Ministry; and

Whereas, Susan H. Brooks has gone beyond the call of duty to help international students and MUSC, hosting families in her home, obtaining medical care and equipment for uninsured international students, finding interpreters so hospital departments can help non-English speaking patients and their families; and

Whereas, Susan H. Brooks has brought international children to MUSC for medical care, helped 100 Chinese nationals obtain residency after the Tiananmen Square incident and assisted families fleeing war in Bosnia; and

Whereas, Susan H. Brooks has been named Outstanding Female State Employee by the South Carolina State Employees Association. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate Susan H. Brooks on her well-deserved honor and express appreciation for thirty years of dedicated service at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of the resolution be forwarded to Susan H. Brooks.
