TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST AND COMMUNITY LEADER, ISAIAH BENNETT OF CHARLESTON, WHO PASSED AWAY FEBRUARY 24, 2002, AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply saddened by the death of such a wonderful man as Isaiah Bennett, who departed this life on February 24, 2002; and

Whereas, Isaiah Bennett was born September 19, 1926, in McClellanville, the ninth of eleven children of Edward Bennett and Mary Washington Bennett; and

Whereas, Isaiah Bennett was educated in McClellanville schools and later moved to Charleston where he began working for the American Tobacco Company's Cigar Factory in January of 1942; and

Whereas, in March 1943, Isaiah Bennett was drafted into the United States Navy where he loyally served until 1946 when he was honorably discharged, and he returned to work at the American Tobacco Company's Cigar Factory in Charleston until he retired in 1973; and

Whereas, Isaiah Bennett served as shop steward of Local 15-A of the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union beginning in 1957 and was elected president in 1971; and

Whereas, Mr. Bennett worked tirelessly to improve the working conditions of black workers and was a founding member of the Charleston Chapter of the A. Philip Randolph Institute, a national umbrella for black trade unionists; he served as president of the Charleston and the South Carolina State chapters and worked diligently on the Get Out the Vote Campaign; and

Whereas, Isaiah Bennett also worked with the Carolina Alliance for Fair Employment in his campaign to improve working conditions and increase pay; and

Whereas, he was involved in the NAACP, American Legion, Prince Hall Masonic Lodge, Office of Economic Opportunity, and many other worthy organizations; and

Whereas, Isaiah Bennett received the Charles Bannerman Award for Civil Rights activists, was inducted into the A. Philip Randolph Institute Hall of Fame, and received numerous other awards for his exceptional services to the working people; and

Whereas, the General Assembly extends its sincere condolences upon his death. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express the profound sorrow upon the death of civil rights activist and community leader, Isaiah Bennett of Charleston, who passed away February 24, 2002, and extend deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Isaiah Bennett.
