TO EXPRESS SYMPATHY TO ALL THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF MR. CLIFTON C. GOODWIN, JR., OF SUMTER COUNTY, UPON LEARNING OF HIS PASSING AND TO PAUSE TO RECOGNIZE HIS SELFLESS ACTS OF SERVICE TO HIS NATION, STATE, AND COMMUNITY.

Whereas, Clifton C. Goodwin, Jr., of Sumter County, passed away at the age of eighty-seven on Monday, March 11, 2002, having lived out his life as a devoted husband, loving father, and model citizen; and

Whereas, Clifton Goodwin was born in Wiggins, Mississippi, the son of the late Clifton Carson and Maggie Swetman Goodwin; and

Whereas, Mr. Goodwin, along with so many of his generation, proudly served his country in the United States Army for over two years; in 1950, he became an entrepreneur when he purchased an automobile franchise and relocated to Sumter, South Carolina; and

Whereas, as president of Goodwin Buick-Jeep and Goodwin Honda-Mitsubishi-Volkswagen, Clifton Goodwin created a very successful automobile dealership that has served the people in his area for over fifty-two years; and

Whereas, Mr. Goodwin served as leader of a variety of community improvement and service organizations including the Sumter County Committee for Progress, the American Legion, the Sumter County United Way Drive, the Sumter Area Technical College Commission, State Development Board, Sumter Rotary Club, YMCA, Sumter Merchants Association, State Automobile Dealers Association, and the South Carolina State Chamber of Commerce; he was also a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church; and

Whereas, Clifton Goodwin, for his many and varied efforts to improve the lives of those around him, was awarded a Doctorate of Humane Letters at Morris College for significant service in human uplift and advancement, the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Sumter Greater Chamber of Commerce for his commitment to public service and economic development, and the Order of the Palmetto, the highest award given to a citizen of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mr. Goodwin is survived by his loving wife Rubie Ham Goodwin, his son and daughter-in-law, his sister, and two grandchildren; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly respectfully take this opportunity to recognize the extraordinary life and accomplishments of one of the Palmetto State's favorite sons. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly express sympathy to all the family and friends of Mr. Clifton C. Goodwin, Jr., of Sumter County upon learning of his passing and pause to recognize his selfless acts of service to his nation, State, and community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his widow, Mrs. Rubie Ham Goodwin of Sumter, South Carolina.
