A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF DR. KAILASH V. MATHUR OF ORANGEBURG COUNTY, AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Kailash V. Mathur of Orangeburg County on Sunday, January 28, 2001; and

Whereas, Dr. Mathur distinguished himself by achieving success in the educational, political, civic, and medical circles in his community, throughout the State, this nation, and throughout the world; and

Whereas, he was a member of the Rotary Club of Orangeburg where he served on the board of directors and chaired its International Project/World Community Service which provided services for people with needs throughout the world; and

Whereas, he held bachelors and veterinary degrees from colleges in India, a Masters degree in diary science from North Carolina State University, and a Doctorate in nutritional sciences from the University of Illinois; and

Whereas, Dr. Mathur came to the United States in 1962 and joined South Carolina State University in 1965, where he taught dairy sciences, nutrition, and natural sciences, and served as director of the Human Nutrition Research Project from 1972 - 1978, and also served as an adjunct professor of nutrition at the Medical University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, President Bill Clinton appointed him to the National Nutrition Monitoring Advisory Council in 1995 and again in 2000, to help develop a national nutrition monitoring plan; and

Whereas, he conducted a comprehensive federally funded study on the impact of cholesterol on South Carolina's elderly, and investigated disease prevention in conjunction with the School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, he served as Chairman of the Orangeburg County Democratic Party from March 2000 until his death, and strove to build the party through unity, recruitment, and retention; and

Whereas, Dr. Mathur leaves his devoted wife, Savita, a son, a daughter, and two grandchildren to mourn his death; and

Whereas, he was a truly compassionate man who strove to improve the lives of the citizens of Orangeburg County, our State, and nation, and the international community, and will be missed by everyone who knew him. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Dr. Kailash V. Mathur of Orangeburg County, and extend deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his wife, Mrs. Savita Mathur.
