URGING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO ENACT THE SOUTHERN DAIRY COMPACT AND SPECIFICALLY URGING THE SOUTH CAROLINA CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION TO LEAD THE EFFORT IN BRINGING THIS COMPACT BEFORE CONGRESS.
Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly has approved South Carolina's joining the Southern Dairy Compact, if created; and
Whereas, a compact will assure local consumers a reliable source of milk that will be reasonably priced and of the highest quality; and
Whereas, a compact will provide economic stability and viability to the local dairy industry; and
Whereas, the now existing Northeast Dairy Compact in the northeastern United States has already proven to be successful for the consumer and the dairy industry; and
Whereas, the General Assembly believes this initiative offers the best opportunity to preserve the remaining family dairy farms in this State; and
Whereas, preservation of these farms is of major importance since South Carolina is a milk deficit state; and
Whereas, the dairy farms in this State are an important part of our agrarian society and are a source of multi-generational family pride and help support related agricultural businesses including feed, seed, fertilizer, equipment dealers, veterinarians, retail stores, and banks; and
Whereas, the income produced on these farms has an economic multiplier effect in our rural communities. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That by this resolution, the South Carolina General Assembly urges the United States Congress to enact the Southern Dairy Compact and specifically urges the South Carolina Congressional Delegation to lead the effort in bringing this compact before Congress.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the President of the Senate, and each member of the South Carolina Congressional Delegation.
