EXPRESSING THE DEEPEST SORROW OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AT THE DEATH OF ORANGEBURG MAYOR, THE HONORABLE MARTIN CHEATHAM, AND JOINING THE CITIZENS OF THE CITY OF ORANGEBURG AND THE STATE IN GRATEFULLY REMEMBERING AND HONORING HIS EXPANSIVE PUBLIC SERVICE.
Whereas, the Honorable Martin Cheatham was born December 4, 1928, in Greenville, the son of Martin and Genevieve Moore Cheatham; and
Whereas, Mayor Cheatham adopted the City of Orangeburg as his home in 1966 when he moved there to manage the local Southern Bell office; and
Whereas, he quickly became an instantly recognizable smiling ambassador for his new community, involving himself in every area of the city's diverse activities; and
Whereas, just a sampling of the highlights of his efforts as a father, businessman, and public servant include loving father to sons Sam, Mike, and Deck, and daughter Harris Murray; devoted husband to wife and business partner, Faye; president of the United Way in 1973 and United Way Volunteer of the Year 1974; past president of the Orangeburg County Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the YMCA Steering Committee to establish a facility in Orangeburg; president of Kiwanis Club, during which time he established a new Key Club and later formed the Kiwanis Junior Golf Tournament, and founded the Richard G. Osborne Memorial Invitational Golf Tournament; member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, where he served as a past chairman, Sunday School teacher, and choir member; Orangeburg County "Citizen of the Year" in 1976; leader of the district committee of the Boy Scouts and the Orangeburg Human Relations Council; volunteer golf coach, promoting junior golf and establishing the Mayor's Cup tournament; and owner of Cheatham and Roe Real Estate with his partner and wife, Faye Roe; and
Whereas, Martin Cheatham has served since being elected Mayor of the City of Orangeburg in 1989, a tenure that left the City with a legacy of ethnic pride in the restoration of an historically significant black cemetery, cultural awareness with the renovation of the Stevenson Auditorium, recreational opportunity through the establishment of the YMCA, and natural beauty in the continuous upgrading and expansion of the Edisto Memorial Gardens; and
Whereas, Martin Cheatham unfailingly greeted his friends and strangers, both, with a genuine smile and a friendly handshake, or even a hug; and
Whereas, he loved his townspeople as much as they loved him. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly express their deepest sorrow at the death of Orangeburg Mayor, the Honorable Martin Cheatham, and join the citizens of the City of Orangeburg and the State in gratefully remembering and honoring his expansive public service.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his wife, Mrs. Faye Roe Cheatham.
