APPLAUDING DR. GEORGE SAWYER OF HARTSVILLE FOR HIS RECOGNITION AS SOUTH CAROLINA TOURISM AMBASSADOR OF 2001 BY THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF PARKS, RECREATION AND TOURISM AND THANKING HIM FOR HIS DAUNTLESS VISION AND TIRELESS CONTRIBUTION IN SHARING THE BEAUTY OF KALMIA GARDENS WITH VISITORS TO DARLINGTON COUNTY AND SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, Dr. George Sawyer was recognized by the state's Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism on May 8, 2001, at a State House ceremony as South Carolina Tourism Ambassador of 2001; and
Whereas, Dr. Sawyer, a native of Hartsville, earned one of only four major awards presented by the department in connection with 2001 National Tourism Week; and
Whereas, the award culminates more than twenty years of painstaking restoration and expansion of the Kalmia Gardens of Coker College; and
Whereas, Dr. Sawyer's vision and leadership, as director of the Kalmia Gardens and Chairman of the South Carolina Cotton Trail Commission, were the genesis of a common marketing and promotional unit among the many points of interest in the Pee Dee area; and
Whereas, the Kalmia Gardens now serve as the anchor attraction for the regional heritage corridor known as the South Carolina Cotton Trail, linking Hartsville, Bishopville, Society Hill, Bennettsville, and Cheraw; and
Whereas, his wife, Gail, and children, Erin and Christopher, have proudly supported his long-time leadership of and activity in the educational, cultural, and environmental life of the Pee Dee. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina do hereby applaud Dr. George Sawyer of Hartsville for his recognition as South Carolina Tourism Ambassador of 2001 by the state Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism and thank him for his dauntless vision and tireless contribution in sharing the beauty of Kalmia Gardens with visitors to Darlington County and South Carolina.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Sawyer.
