A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING PAUL CONWAY OF THE CHARLESTON BATTERY SOCCER TEAM ON BEING NAMED THE 2001 A-LEAGUE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER.

Whereas, Paul Conway, midfielder/forward and striker for the Charleston Battery professional soccer team, has been named as the 2001 A-League Most Valuable Player; and

Whereas, this is the first time that a Charleston Battery player has received the MVP distinction; and

Whereas, the A-League MVP is decided by the league coaches and general managers who cast votes to select the league's most valuable player; the award caps a stellar season for Paul Conway, who was also named to the A-League first team and was the regular season scoring and points champion; and

Whereas, he had an outstanding season in 2001; he scored 22 goals and added 3 assists in 25 regular season starts; he added 4 goals and an assist in US Open Cup action and also scored a goal in the playoffs; his grand total for the year was 27 goals, 4 assists, and 58 points in 32 games played; and

Whereas, Paul Conway is clearly an outstanding athlete and his achievements have brought pride and honor to the Charleston Battery Team, the City of Charleston, and the State of South Carolina; his accomplishments in 2001 are greatly deserving of praise, and we are pleased to have this opportunity to recognize and honor him. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates and salutes Paul Conway of the Charleston Battery soccer team on being named the 2001 A-League Most Valuable Player and wishes him much success in the future.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Paul Conway.
