A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE WRESTLERS, COACHES, AND STAFF OF THE SUMMERVILLE HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TEAM FOR THEIR HARD-NOSED EFFORT DURING THE SEASON AND CONGRATULATE THE TEAM ON WINNING THE 2002 WRESTLING STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, the Summerville High School Wrestling Team won its second consecutive state title when it defeated Dutch Fork by a score of thirty-two to thirty-one to win the 2002 state championship match; and

Whereas, the "Green Wave" from Summerville had taken down Dutch Fork for the second year in a row to clinch its ninth state title and it forty-third consecutive dual match victory without a loss in two seasons; and

Whereas, throughout the 2002 season, doubters in the high school wrestling world said that Summerville could not repeat as state champions, with web sites, magazines, and coaches around the state all expressing doubt in the "Green Wave's" ability to perform; and

Whereas, the Summerville wrestling team had to replace eight starters from last year's championship team, but with hard work and determination, the 2002 team, with its eight new editions, never faltered; and

Whereas, after soundly defeating the team from Stratford by a fifty-four to fifteen margin, Summerville advanced to the title match against Dutch Fork; after a highly motivational pre-match speech by long-time "Green Wave" wrestling coach Steve LaPrad, the grapplers from Summerville came out and won the four matches needed for the title with a quartet of seniors leading the way; and

Whereas, the 2002 wrestling team from Summerville was a collection of spirited and committed student-athletes including: Andruw Young, Tyler LaPrad, Derek Freshmen, Gerald Turner, Brad Kieber, Matt Spivey, Joe Wickenhoefer, Joe Riley, Terrell Riley, Toby Wickenhoefer, Travis Perry, Jonathan Bragg, Sharron Gathers, Khalif Chavis, Jada Ross, Tyrell Manigault, and Dustin Fry; and

Whereas, the "Green Wave" wrestlers are directed by Head Coach Kenny Walker, Assistant Coach Chris Burns, with support from Middle School Coaches Stacey Woods, Daryll Tucker, and Sean Cavanas; and

Whereas, winning a state championship brings memories to be cherished forever, and the 2002 members of the Summerville High School Wrestling Team, who were doubted by so many all season, will have plenty of memories to share with their loved ones for the rest of their lives. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend the wrestlers, coaches, and staff of the Summerville High School Wrestling Team for their hard-nosed effort during the season and congratulate the team on winning the 2002 Wrestling State Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Head Coach Kenny Walker on behalf of the 2002 Summerville High School Wrestling Team.
