TO COMMEND KRISTIN KAY, SUMMERVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MATH TEACHER, FOR HER INITIATIVE IN TAKING ELEMENTARY EDUCATION BEYOND THE CLASSROOM AND INTO THE HOMES OF THE CHILDREN WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE "MORNINGS WITH MOMS" PROGRAM.

Whereas, Kristin Kay, a math teacher at Summerville Elementary School, has executed an innovative program called "Mornings with Moms" that provides mothers with the teaching tools to supplement what the children learn at school with exercises at home; and

Whereas, Kristin Kay received approximately eight thousand dollars in grant funding to launch her unique program this year providing monthly breakfast workshops for mothers; and

Whereas, with enough money to serve twenty people, Kristin Kay invited the mothers of all forty students who could benefit from "Mornings with Moms" to make the opportunity equally available and has ended with twelve excited and appreciative mothers for her first year; and

Whereas, "Mornings with Moms" provides parents with applied strategies for teaching their children at home using books and math manipulatives such as calculators, plastic money, and pattern blocks; and

Whereas, Kristin Kay's idea for the program came from her realization that some of her students did not have books at home and her desire to get parents more involved in their children's education; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are proud to recognize the pioneering accomplishments of such a motivated and inspiring teacher as Kristin Kay of Summerville Elementary School. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend Kristin Kay, Summerville Elementary School math teacher, for her initiative in taking elementary education beyond the classroom and into the homes of the children with the implementation of the "Mornings with Moms" program.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Kristin Kay of Summerville.
