A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND FIRE CHIEF LYNWOOD O. WOMACK OF THE MYRTLE BEACH FIRE DEPARTMENT FOR HIS OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP OF THE DEPARTMENT UPON HIS RETIREMENT AS CHIEF.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly with regret have learned that Fire Chief Lynwood O. Womack of the Myrtle Beach Fire Department has announced his retirement; and

Whereas, under Chief Womack's direction, the Myrtle Beach Fire Department has become one of the best if not the best department in the State; and

Whereas, Lynwood O. Womack joined the Myrtle Beach Fire Department in 1974 as a firefighter and quickly moved up the ranks, becoming fire chief in 1990; and

Whereas, his leadership potential was recognized early when he was selected as the City Employee of the Year in 1983; and

Whereas, under the effective leadership of Chief Womack, the department's workforce has doubled and two stations have been added, bringing the total to five; and

Whereas, Chief Womack was instrumental in the department's expansion in fire and emergency medical services training. When the local Air Force base closed, Chief Womack petitioned for and received a grant of one million seven hundred fifty thousand dollars to purchase property to be used as a fire-training academy; and

Whereas, through an active public fire education and prevention division, Chief Womack has dramatically reduced the number of fire deaths to only two in the past twelve years; and

Whereas, for its emphasis on this program, the department has twice received the Richard S. Campbell Award for Excellence in Fire and Life Safety Education from the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs; and

Whereas, Chief Womack has also been a leader in his community as the President of the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs and a key organizer in the creation of the South Carolina Fallen Firefighter Memorial that stands on the grounds of the Fire Academy; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly would like to recognize and thank Chief Lynwood O. Womack of the Myrtle Beach Fire Department for his substantial contributions to the fire department, the City of Myrtle Beach, and the State of South Carolina upon the occasion of his retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend Fire Chief Lynwood O. Womack of the Myrtle Beach Fire Department for his outstanding leadership of the department upon his retirement as Chief.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Fire Chief Lynwood O. Womack of the Myrtle Beach Fire Department.
