TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2002, OF PAUL J. GELEGOTIS OF JAMES ISLAND, FORMER MEMBER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN, AND THE FATHER OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES IN CHARLESTON COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina were deeply saddened by the death of well-respected former legislator, businessman, and public servant, Paul J. Gelegotis, who was killed February 20, 2002, in a tragic car accident; and

Whereas, Paul J. Gelegotis was born in Weirton, West Virginia, in 1923 to John and Irene Beglanis Gelegotis; he attended Texas A&M University and served with honor in the United States Army during World War II; and

Whereas, he was a successful businessman and owner of the James Island Piggly Wiggly for thirty-three years and was an outstanding community leader who was instrumental in the formation of the James Island Public Service District and the James Island YMCA; and

Whereas, Mr. Gelegotis was an admired and respected member of the House of Representatives, serving three terms beginning in 1975. After he chaired the committee establishing the Charleston County Emergency Medical Services, he continued to champion emergency medical services in the General Assembly sponsoring legislation that brought comprehensive emergency medical services into focus and leaving a lasting legacy across the State; and

Whereas, as a result of his dedicated public service, distinguished leadership, and selflessness, Paul J. Gelegotis was honored with the Public Service Award from the South Carolina Medical Association; and

Whereas, he is listed in the James Island Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds and Who's Who in South Carolina, and he was awarded the Prix D'Honneur from La Societe Francaise for outstanding service to his community; and

Whereas, Mr. Gelegotis was a faithful member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity; and

Whereas, he was the beloved husband of Eva Diasourakis Gelegotis, devoted father of a son and two daughters, and the adoring grandfather of four. He is also survived by his sister. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death on Wednesday, February 20, 2002, of Paul J. Gelegotis of James Island, former member of the House of Representatives, successful businessman, and the father of Emergency Medical Services in Charleston County, and extend deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Paul J. Gelegotis of James Island.
