Whereas, the Orangeburg-Wilkinson Varsity Girls Basketball team defeated Dutch Fork High School 58-47 on Friday, March 8, 2002, at the Carolina Coliseum to win the Class AAAA State Championship; and

Whereas, the Orangeburg-Wilkinson Bruinettes finished the 2001-2002 season with a perfect record of twenty-four wins and no losses, the second perfect season in fifteen years since the 1986-1987 team accomplished this feat; and

Whereas, the 2002 Bruinettes practiced hard and played hard all season and received their seventeenth Region 3-AAAA title, ninth Upper State title, and fourth State Class AAAA title this year; and

Whereas, Orangeburg-Wilkinson held their opponents to an average of thirty-five points per game, winning by a margin of over twenty-six points per game during the season and over sixteen points per game in the four playoff games. The girls won twenty-two of their twenty-four games by double digits; and

Whereas, co-captains Brittany Sumpter was named to the All-State team and the Region 3-AAAA team and was named All-T&D Region Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Co-captain Taffika Haynes was named to the All-State team, All-T&D Region team, and North Star team; and

Whereas, Head Coach Edward Pellman received his well deserved sixth Region 3-AAAA Coach of the Year award this past season. In his eighteen seasons with the Bruinettes, he has won 376 career games, fourteen region titles, four state titles, and has never had a losing season; and

Whereas, the General Assembly is pleased to publicly recognize and honor the Orangeburg-Wilkinson Varsity Girls Basketball Team for their incredible season and championship win. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, commend and congratulate the players, coaches, and staff of the Orangeburg-Wilkinson Varsity Girls Basketball Team on their phenomenal, perfect season and their 2002 Class AAAA State Championship and to wish them much athletic and academic success in the future.
