A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE ALLENDALE-FAIRFAX CLASS AA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BASKETBALL TEAM ON THE TIGERS' MOMENTOUS RALLY TO TOPPLE THE FAVORITES FROM CALHOUN COUNTY 64-59 AND GRAB THE SCHOOL'S FIRST STATE BASKETBALL TITLE.

Whereas, the Allendale-Fairfax High School basketball team went into the Class AA playoffs with nine losses against them, including two losses to the two-time State Champion Calhoun County Saints; and

Whereas, against all odds they made it to the final round of the playoffs, facing the Saints who were on a winning streak of 56 games in Class AA play since 1999; and

Whereas, the Tigers were down 55-47 with less than four minutes left on the clock, but somebody forgot to tell them it was all over but the shouting; and

Whereas, the spunky five surged past the Saints with a 17-4 run, including a Maurice Hoover three-pointer that gave the Allendale-Fairfax team its first lead since early in the game; and

Whereas, although Hoover took center stage during crunch time, 6'6" Tristan Hayward set things into motion when the sophomore center returned from the bench after his fourth foul at 4:52 minutes in the fourth, and came up with two steals--one leading to a score by Shawn Kirkland that cut the deficit to 55-50 at 3:32 remaining, the other resulting in a breakaway by himself and an intentional foul call on the Saints; Hayward hit one of the two free throws, and on the bonus Tigers' possession, 6'5" junior Eric Priester followed up a miss by Kirkland to move Allendale-Fairfax within 57-56 of the Saints with 1:03 left; and

Whereas, Coach Shawn Jones' team demonstrated remarkable balance in the title game, with Kirkland and Priester sharing scoring honors with 16 points apiece; Priester also grabbed nine rebounds and had two assists; Hoover augmented his 13 points with five rebounds, six assists, and six steals; Derrell Doe chipped in 10 points, and Hayward tallied 8; and

Whereas, the 2002 Tigers are a model of the never-say-die attitude of the citizens of Allendale County and the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, the Tiger roster includes: Shaun Kirkland, Eric Priester, Tristan Hayward, Michael Washington, Joseph Brown, Derrell Doe, Daquan Chess, Brian Smith, Maurice Hoover, Eric Jones, Terrence Brown, Craig Robinson, and Devon Smith. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate the Allendale-Fairfax Class AAA State Championship basketball team on the Tigers' momentous rally to topple the favorites from Calhoun County 64-59 and grab the school's first state basketball title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Coach Shawn Jones on behalf of the team.
