THE COMMITTEE ON JUDICIARY

    To whom was referred a Bill (S. 289) to amend Section 2-19-80, Code of Laws of South Carolina, 1976, relating to the nominating process of qualified judicial candidates to the General Assembly, so as to require a two-week period, etc., respectfully

    That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:

A BILL

TO AMEND SECTION 2-19-80, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO THE NOMINATING PROCESS OF QUALIFIED JUDICIAL CANDIDATES TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, SO AS TO REQUIRE A TWO-WEEK PERIOD BETWEEN THE DATE OF THE JUDICIAL MERIT SELECTION COMMISSION'S NOMINATIONS TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND THE DATE THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY CONDUCTS THE ELECTION FOR THESE JUDGESHIPS.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Section 2-19-80(E) of the 1976 Code, is amended to read:

    "(E)    A period of at least three two weeks must elapse between the date of the commission's nominations to the General Assembly and the date the General Assembly conducts the election for these judgeships."

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
