A BILL

TO AMEND ACT 588 OF 1986, AS AMENDED, RELATING TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF SINGLE MEMBER ELECTION DISTRICTS FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD OF AIKEN COUNTY, SO AS TO REAPPORTION THE DISTRICTS, DELETE PREVIOUS APPORTIONMENT AND REAPPORTIONMENT PLANS, AND EXTEND THE DATE FOR FILING NOMINATING PETITIONS FOR ELECTIONS CONDUCTED FOR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS IN 2002.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Act 588 of 1986, as last amended by Act 576 of 1992, is further amended by adding a new Section 1A to read:

    "Section 1A.    Beginning with the election conducted in 2002 the nine defined single-member election districts from which each member of the School Board of Aiken County must be elected by the qualified electors of that district are as shown on the official map designated as S-03-00-02 prepared by and on file with the Office of Research and Statistical Services of the State Budget and Control Board."

SECTION    2.    Section 1 of Act 588 of 1986 is deleted.

SECTION    3.    Notwithstanding any other provision of law, for the election of members of the School Board of Aiken County in 2002 only, the date for filing the nominating petitions for candidates is extended until noon September 6, 2002.

SECTION    4.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
