AN ACT TO AMEND ACT 779 OF 1988, AS AMENDED, RELATING TO LAURENS COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICTS 55 AND 56, SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT THE ELECTIONS FOR SCHOOL BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR THE DISTRICTS MUST BE HELD ON THE SECOND TUESDAY OF MARCH INSTEAD OF THE FIRST TUESDAY OF MARCH, IN APPROPRIATE YEARS.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

Election date changed

SECTION    1.    Section 1(F) of Act 779 of 1988, as last amended by Act 520 of 1996, is further amended to read:

"(F)    An election to elect a school board trustee must be held on the first Tuesday in March 1997, by the Laurens County Election Commission in Laurens County School District 55, Election Districts 2, 4, and 6 as described in this section. The trustees elected in each district shall take office on April 1, 1997, and shall serve a four-year term. After that election, successors must be elected for regular four-year terms at elections to be held on the second Tuesday in March of the appropriate year to take office on April first."

Election date changed

SECTION    2.    Section 1(G) of Act 779 of 1988, as last amended by Act 174 of 1995, is further amended to read:

"(G)    An election to elect a school board trustee must be held on the first Tuesday in March 1999, by the Laurens County Election Commission in Laurens County School District 55, Election Districts 1, 3, 5, and 7 as described in this section. The trustees elected in each district shall take office on April 1, 1999, and shall serve a four-year term. After that election, successors must be elected for regular four-year terms at elections to be held on the second Tuesday in March of the appropriate year to take office on April first."

Election date changed

SECTION    3.    Section 2(F) of Act 779 of 1988 is amended to read:

"(F)    An election to elect a school board trustee must be held on the first Tuesday in March 1989, by the Laurens County Election Commission in Laurens County School District 56, Election Districts 5, 6, and 7 as described in this section. The trustees elected in each district shall take office on April 1, 1989. Thereafter, successors must be elected for regular four-year terms at elections to be held on the second Tuesday in March of the appropriate year to take office on April first."

Election date changed

SECTION    4.    Section 2(G) of Act 779 of 1988 is amended to read:

"(G)    The members of the Board of Trustees of School District 56 of Laurens County, Election Districts 1, 2, 3, and 4 elected March 1, 1988, shall continue to serve until their successors are elected and qualify on the second Tuesday in March 1991. Their successors must be elected for regular four-year terms at elections to be held on the second Tuesday in March of the appropriate year to take office on April first."

Time effective

SECTION    5.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.

Ratified the 18th day of February, 2003.

Approved the 21st day of February, 2003.
