TO EXPRESS THE SINCERE SORROW OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF JOHN MATTISON MAHON, SENIOR, OF SUMTER THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2002, AND TO CONVEY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were deeply saddened by the death of public servant, community leader, and loyal friend, John Mattison Mahon, Senior, of Sumter, on December 5, 2002, at the age of eighty-seven; and

Whereas, Mr. Mahon was born in Greenwood to Douglas Gray and Wakefield Mattison Mahon. He grew up in Calhoun Falls and graduated from Clemson University in 1936 with a degree in Civil Engineering; and

Whereas, Mr. Mahon was an engineer with the South Carolina Highway Department before the start of World War II when he was commissioned in the Army Air Corps. He instructed pilots in B-17s and B-29s before serving on Guam as a B-29 pilot during the war; and

Whereas, Mr. Mahon served in the South Carolina National Guard until retiring in 1967 as a colonel. He commanded field artillery units in Georgetown and Sumter; and

Whereas, Mr. Mahon was the resident engineer for the Highway Department in Sumter until 1951 when he accepted the position of Sumter County engineer, where he served until his retirement in 1972; and

Whereas, some of Mr. Mahon's accomplishments as Sumter County engineer include upgrading roads and bridges and constructing athletic facilities, airports, and industrial parks. In recognition of Mr. Mahon's contributions to Sumter County, a portion of McCrays Mill Road was named the John Mahon Parkway in his honor; and

Whereas, Mr. Mahon was active in the community and served on the board of the National Bank of South Carolina and the Salvation Army. He served as president of the Sumter YMCA, the Sumter Rotary Club, and the Sumter Cotillion, Trian, and Assembly Clubs and was a member of the American Legion and the Aldersgate United Methodist Church; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives extend their deepest sympathy to the family and many friends of John Mattison Mahon, Senior. He is survived by his wife, Octavia 'Ta' M. Mahon; two sons, John Mattison Mahon, Junior, and Richard M. Mahon; two daughters, Virginia 'Ginger' M. Mize and Susan M. Gamble; brother, Peter M. Mahon; sister, Lucy M. Stevenson; seven grandchildren, Katherine Robinson, Lucy Mahon, Mattison Gamble, Ginny Gamble, Anna Mize, Sally Mahon, and Molly Mahon; and a great-granddaughter, Kate Robinson.

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their sincere sorrow upon the death of John Mattison Mahon, Senior, of Sumter Thursday, December 5, 2002, and convey deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. John Mattison Mahon, Senior, of Sumter.
