AN ACT TO PROVIDE THAT BEGINNING WITH SCHOOL YEAR 2003-2004, THE STARTING DATE AND ENDING DATE FOR THE ANNUAL SCHOOL TERM OF SCHOOL DISTRICTS NO. 50 AND 52 IN GREENWOOD COUNTY, SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 51 IN GREENWOOD AND LAURENS COUNTIES, AND SCHOOL DISTRICTS NO. 55 AND 56 IN LAURENS COUNTY MUST BE SET BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE DISTRICTS IN THEIR SOLE DISCRETION, PROVIDED THAT THE ANNUAL SCHOOL TERM MUST COMPLY WITH ALL REQUIREMENTS OF SECTION 59-1-420 RELATING TO LENGTH OF THE SCHOOL TERM.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

School starting and ending date

SECTION    1.    (A)    Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 59-5-71 of the 1976 Code, or a regulation or action of the State Board of Education to the contrary, beginning with school year 2003-2004, local school district boards of trustees of the following districts shall set the starting and ending date for the annual school terms of the schools in their districts:

(1)    School District No. 50 in Greenwood County;

(2)    School District No. 52 in Greenwood County;

(3)    School District No. 51 in Greenwood and Laurens Counties;

(4)    School District No. 55 in Laurens County; and

(5)    School District No. 56 in Laurens County.

(B)    The annual school term must comply with all requirements of Section 59-1-420 relating to length of the school term.

Time effective

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
