TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON LEARNING OF THE DEATH OF MRS. OLIVIA WILLIAMS OF SUMTER, AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply saddened upon learning of the death of Mrs. Olivia Williams of Sumter, who died on March 5, 2003, at the age of fifty; and

Whereas, Mrs. Williams was born in Brookhaven, Mississippi, the daughter of Ruth Hines and the late Fleetwood Hines, and the sister of Fleetwood Hines, Jr. of Hoover, Alabama; and

Whereas, she was the loving wife of Kenneth Vaughn Williams of Sumter, to whom she was married for twenty-nine years and was also the loving and devoted mother of Hilary Williams Lajeunesse of Lawrenceville, Georgia; and

Whereas, Mrs. Williams graduated from the University of Alabama receiving both her bachelor's and master's degrees from that institution and became a licensed master social worker; and

Whereas, Mrs. Williams used her education and training to aid the Sumter community by serving as the assistant director of the Santee-Wateree Mental Health Center from June 1988 until November of 1991 and then went on to become the executive director of the center from February 1992 until her death; and

Whereas, she gained national recognition during her lifetime, receiving the distinguished honor of being named to the National Directory of Who's Who in Executives and Professionals in 1996 and establishing an employment program for mental health patients; and

Whereas, Mrs. Williams demonstrated her dedication to the citizens of Sumter and the State of South Carolina by serving on numerous boards and committees, such as the Sumter Rotary Club, the South Carolina Department of Mental Health Planning Council and Transition Council, the Continuity of Care Committee, the Center Directors Planning and Policy Committee, and the "Let's Get to Work!" Committee; and

Whereas, Mrs. Williams is survived by her mother, Ruth Hines of Mississippi, her brother, Fleetwood Hines, Jr. of Alabama, her husband, Kenneth Vaughn Williams of Sumter, and her daughter, Hilary Williams Lajeunesse of Lawrenceville, Georgia. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, express profound sorrow upon learning of the death of Mrs. Olivia Williams of Sumter and extend deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Kenneth Vaughn Williams of Sumter.
