A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE JOAN C. SCOTT OF COLUMBIA FOR BEING THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN TO HOLD THE POSITION OF PRESIDENT OF THE PALMETTO CABINET AND ON BEING THE IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT OF THE PALMETTO CABINET, COMMEND HER FOR HER MANY CONTRIBUTIONS AS PRESIDENT OF THE PALMETTO CABINET, AND WISH HER MUCH SUCCESS IN ALL OF HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Mrs. Joan C. Scott is the first African-American to hold the position of president of the Palmetto Cabinet, which is comprised of spouses of the members of the General Assembly; and

Whereas, Mrs. Scott is a graduate of South Carolina State University with a bachelor's degree in business education. She was employed with Colonial Life and Accident Insurance Company for twenty-two years and held various positions with the company including executive assistant to second vice president and senior life medical underwriter; and

Whereas, after working for Colonial Life, Mrs. Scott became the office manager of the J. L. Scott Realty Company. Currently, she is the vice president and partner of the C & S Consulting Group; and

Whereas, Mrs. Scott is heavily involved in the community and is a past board member of the YWCA, the Columbia Free Medical Clinic, and Children Unlimited, Inc. She is a current board member of the Eboni Dance Theater, treasurer of the Columbia Chapter of CHUMS, Inc., and president of the Stock Watchers Investment Club. She also volunteered her time with Project BluePrint and received the Tribute to Women in Industry Award in 1992; and

Whereas, a devoted and faithful member of New Ebenezer Baptist Church, Mrs. Scott served as chair of the scholarship foundation from 1992 to 2001. She is married to Representative John L. Scott and together they are the proud parents of John L. Scott III; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are proud to honor Mrs. Joan C. Scott for her many contributions to her community and her service as the first African-American to hold the position of president of the Palmetto Cabinet. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate Joan C. Scott of Columbia for being the first African-American to hold the position of president of the Palmetto Cabinet and on being the immediate past president of the Palmetto Cabinet, commend her for her many contributions as president of the Palmetto Cabinet, and wish her much success in all of her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Joan C. Scott of Columbia.
