A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE MR. CHARLES T. COLE, JR., OF COLUMBIA FOR HIS COMMITMENT TO IMPROVING THE CITY OF COLUMBIA AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO MR. COLE ON BEING NAMED THE 2003 AMBASSADOR OF THE YEAR.

Whereas, Mr. Charles T. Cole, Jr., of Columbia has given generously of his time and energy to ensure that this State and the City of Columbia will continue to flourish economically, educationally, artfully, and environmentally; and

Whereas, his dedication to economic growth, which has enabled Columbia and South Carolina to gain better business opportunities, is evidenced by his service on numerous boards and commissions as a member or chairperson, including serving as Vice-Chairman of the Columbia Convention Center Authority, Chairman of Central Carolina Economic Development Alliance, Chairman of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce's Member Relations Committee, past-Chairman of the Central Carolina Community Foundation, member of the Rotary Club, member of the Board of the Atrium Society, member of the University of South Carolina Business Partnership Foundation Board, and member of the South Carolina Business Alliance Committee; and

Whereas, Mr. Cole has also been devoted to the improvement of education in this State, being involved with the enhancement of both public and private institutions of learning by serving as the President-elect of the University of South Carolina Associates, member of the South Carolina Independent Colleges Board of Trustees, member of The Citadel Foundation Board, and member of the Midlands Technical College Foundation Board; and

Whereas, Mr. Cole has demonstrated his love for the arts by being the past-Chairman of the South Carolina State Museum Foundation, the past-President of the Columbia Museum of Art, a past-member of the Board of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts, and a current member of the Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties; and

Whereas, even though he has been committed to other areas of improvement, he has also shown that he recognizes the importance of the preservation of the environment with his service as a board member for the River Alliance and as a corporate member of the Friends of the Congaree Swamp; and

Whereas, in 2002, he was the honorary Chairman of the Palmetto Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Walk to Cure Diabetes, raising over a half million dollars for that organization; and

Whereas, he also patriotically served this country as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserves, and he faithfully gives his time as an Elder at Eastminster Presbyterian Church; and

Whereas, Mr. Cole is held in high regard by all who have had the pleasure of working with him; and

Whereas, Mr. Cole, his wife, Joanne, and their two children have all enjoyed the successes that he has experienced thus far in his life, especially his most recent accomplishment of being named the 2003 Ambassador of the Year. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, wish to recognize Mr. Charles T. Cole, Jr., of Columbia for his commitment to improving the City of Columbia and the State of South Carolina and to extend our congratulations to Mr. Cole on being named the 2003 Ambassador of the Year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Charles T. Cole, Jr., of Columbia.
