A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO WELCOME MRS. BETTY MORRIS OF ABERDEEN, MARYLAND, TO SOUTH CAROLINA, THE 2002-2003 NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF THE LADIES AUXILIARY TO THE VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS OF THE UNITED STATES, AND TO COMMEND MRS. MORRIS AND THE LADIES AUXILIARY FOR THE WONDERFUL WORK THEY HAVE DONE ON BEHALF OF THIS NATION'S VETERANS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to learn that Mrs. Betty Morris of Aberdeen, Maryland, 2002-2003 National President of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, will be visiting South Carolina on April 27 and 28, 2003; and

Whereas, Mrs. Morris holds the distinctions of being the first black American and the first from Maryland to serve as the National President of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. She was elected to the auxiliary's highest office at the eighty-ninth national convention in Nashville, Tennessee, on Friday, August 30, 2002; and

Whereas, since its beginning in 1914, the Ladies Auxiliary VFW has worked to assist veterans. Today the organization also is involved in various other endeavors, such as sponsoring scholarships and awards for students who participate in patriotic art, speech, and volunteerism contests; donating goods and services to help the victims of violence, terrorism, and natural disasters; and conducting a special birthday celebration on October twenty-eighth for the Statue of Liberty; and

Whereas, her many positions on all levels of the organization include two terms as Auxiliary #6054 President, President and Honor Guard Captain for District 5, and Eastern States Soloist from 1992-2000. She also was named Outstanding Department President when she served in that capacity in 1990-91, and was elected to represent Rhode Island and Maryland on the National Council of Administration for 1993-95; and

Whereas, she is eligible for the auxiliary through her husband, Zarnoff F. Morris, a twenty-two year United States Army retiree who has been active in the VFW for more than thirty years. They have five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and welcome this distinguished American to our State and wish her every success during her term as National President of the Ladies Auxiliary. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly welcome Mrs. Betty Morris of Aberdeen, Maryland, to South Carolina, the 2002-2003 National President of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, and commend Mrs. Morris and the ladies auxiliary for the wonderful work they have done on behalf of this nation's veterans.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Betty Morris.
