A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE AND HONOR THE MEMBERS OF THE 1953 GRADUATING CLASS OF ALLEN UNIVERSITY IN CELEBRATION OF THEIR GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY FRIDAY, MAY 2, 2003, AND TO COMMEND ITS MEMBERS FOR THEIR MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COMMUNITY.

Whereas, Allen University was founded in 1870, just five years after the close of the Civil War, and has operated continuously for one hundred thirty-three years; and

Whereas, the Class of 1953 entered Allen University just before the close of the first half of the twentieth century, in 1949 and graduated in 1953. The entering freshmen class was more than two hundred in membership. Some of the brightest and best from schools in South Carolina and several states across the country enrolled at Allen University; and

Whereas, among the enrolling freshmen were Veterans of World War II, who had fought in Europe, the Far East, and around the world. The GI Bill enabled many veterans to return as full-time students to earn their college degrees; and

Whereas, after graduation in 1953, many members of the class went their separate ways to make a living and a life in various fields. Many entered the field of education while others became pastors in various churches of South Carolina and across the United States; and

Whereas, one member of the class went into the entertainment field and performed on Broadway and played a role in several movies. Another member of the class was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1992 and has been re-elected five times to serve the people of Georgia; and

Whereas, many members of the class went into the field of education and became principals, counselors, coaches, and teachers on all levels, including the college level; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are proud to recognize the 1953 graduating class of Allen University on this momentous occasion. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate and honor the members of the 1953 graduating class of Allen University in celebration of their Golden Anniversary Friday, May 2, 2003, and commend its members for their many accomplishments and contributions to the community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be given to each member of the graduating class of 1953 attending the fiftieth class reunion on May 2, 2003.
