A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO REVEREND CHRIS GARRISON AND THE MEMBERS OF BOLD SPRING BAPTIST CHURCH OF THE CALLISON COMMUNITY OF GREENWOOD COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR SESQUICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION ON SUNDAY, JUNE 22, 2003.

Whereas, churches in this State provide encouragement and support to their members and promote the spiritual growth of their congregations through Bible lessons, songs of praise, and other ministerial work; and

Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the invaluable work of preachers and members of churches in teaching religion and advocating for peace among all people; and

Whereas, for 150 years, Bold Spring Baptist Church of Greenwood County has been dedicated and has generously given to the Callison Community and is held in high regard by the residents of the area and across the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, the church was established in 1853 by seventeen charter members who personally constructed the first sanctuary to serve the small congregation because there was no other Baptist church in the immediate area, and the church's first members were led by Reverend James Shadrack; and

Whereas, the member-constructed church served as the meeting house of Bold Spring Baptist Church from its inception until 1884, when a tornado destroyed it, but a new and bigger building replaced the original, beginning a history of construction for this church; and

Whereas, its most recent construction efforts began in 1999, under the leadership of an interim minister, Reverend Ralph Cowan, who was working with the South Carolina Baptist Convention's church-building program called "Challenge to Build", and have continued until today with the church's current minister, Reverend Chris Garrison; and

Whereas, in the past few years, Bold Spring Baptist Church has made great strides and has seen a rise in attendance in Sunday School, Discipleship Training, and various other programs, and the church has felt the tremendous support of its current members who have contributed nearly $270,000 to build the proposed additions to the sanctuary; and

Whereas, on Sunday, June 22, 2003, Bold Spring Baptist Church will hold its Sesquicentennial Celebration, which will include historical accounts of the church and its members, special music, and information about the future of Bold Spring Baptist Church. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, wish to extend their congratulations to Reverend Chris Garrison and the members of Bold Spring Baptist Church of the Callison Community of Greenwood County on the occasion of their sesquicentennial celebration on Sunday, June 22, 2003.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Reverend Chris Garrison and the members of Bold Spring Baptist Church of the Callison Community of Greenwood County.
