A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE SINCERE APPRECIATION AND UNQUALIFIED SUPPORT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA FOR THE THOUSANDS OF SOUTH CAROLINIANS PROUDLY SERVING IN THE NATIONAL GUARD AND RESERVE, AND RESPECTFULLY ACKNOWLEDGING THAT THEIR SELFLESS SERVICE IS ESSENTIAL TO THE STRENGTH AND SECURITY OF OUR NATION AND STATE.

Whereas, more than twelve thousand patriotic South Carolinians voluntarily serve in the South Carolina Army and Air National Guard and all branches of the Reserve; and

Whereas, South Carolinians serving in the National Guard and Reserve have a proud tradition of taking up arms to defend our nation in every war that Americans have been called upon to protect liberty and freedom; and

Whereas, as the shadow of war darkens the horizon even now, our nation's security continues to rely on the men and women of the National Guard and Reserve who are augmenting their active duty counterparts around the world with trained, equipped, and ready forces; and

Whereas, it is imperative not only that the public understand the essential role of the National Guard and Reserve in preserving our national strength and security, but also that all communities, businesses, and employers encourage and honor participation in the National Guard and Reserve by these volunteer forces; and

Whereas, the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina is proud to take the lead in honoring these courageous sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters of our State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express sincere appreciation and unqualified support for the thousands of South Carolinians proudly serving in the National Guard and Reserve, and respectfully acknowledge that their selfless service is essential to the strength and security of our nation and State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable Donald H. Rumsfeld, United States Secretary of Defense, and Major General Stanhope S. Spears, South Carolina Adjutant General.
