A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE ROBERT "BOBBY" BUTLER GIBBONS, JR., OF NEW ZION IN CLARENDON COUNTY, ON BEING ELECTED COMMANDER OF THE AMERICAN LEGION FOR THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the General Assembly recognizes South Carolinians who give their time and energy to help build a sense of togetherness and mutual support among the people of their communities; and

Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the great achievements of the people who serve with organizations and institutions to ensure the ongoing involvement of the Palmetto State in national affairs; and

Whereas, Robert "Bobby" Butler Gibbons, Jr., has been working with the American Legion since high school and his involvement with this fine organization has brought honor and prestige to South Carolina; and

Whereas, as a graduate of East Clarendon High School in Turbeville, South Carolina, Mr. Gibbons was also a participant in the American Legion Palmetto Boys State, held at The Citadel; and

Whereas, after earning an A.S. in Business Administration from Victor Valley College in Victorville, California, he continued to work for the United States Air Force as an Instructional Systems Development Manager, maintaining Top Secret Security Clearance throughout his career until his retirement in 1989; and

Whereas, upon retirement from the Air Force, Bobby worked as Chief of Security for several Fortune 50 Industries before retiring in 1999 to devote his full attention to the American Legion; and

Whereas, he has held a number of responsible offices and positions with the American Legion culminating with his election as Commander of the American Legion for the State of South Carolina in 2003; and

Whereas, as a graduate from the National American Legion College in Indianapolis, Indiana, he has demonstrated a commitment and spirit consistent with the values of the American Legion and will lead the American Legion of South Carolina ably and with great skill throughout his tenure; and

Whereas, Bobby is devoted to his family, including his wife, the former Jean Claire Kennedy of New Zion, South Carolina, and their four children and nine grandchildren; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly would like to offer him many congratulations and best wishes upon his election to this prestigious office. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate Robert "Bobby" Butler Gibbons, Jr., of New Zion in Clarendon County, on being elected Commander of the American Legion for the State of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Robert "Bobby" Butler Gibbons, Jr.
