A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND MEMORIALIZE STEPHEN DAVIS, NFL RUNNING BACK FOR THE CAROLINA PANTHERS, FOR HIS ACHIEVEMENTS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD AND IN THE COMMUNITY AND TO EXTEND TO HIM BEST WISHES IN ALL OF HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Stephen Davis of Spartanburg has become one of the most respected and recognized running backs in the National Football League, and he was a major component of the Carolina Panthers Football Team and its first Super Bowl appearance in February 2004; and

Whereas, in only four years, Mr. Davis has become one of the top five running backs in the NFL, and he has become one of the most respected and adored Panthers in Charlotte, North Carolina, showing up to play every Sunday, remaining humble, and going to work; and

Whereas, with 1,444 rushing yards this past year, Mr. Davis holds the single season rushing record for the Carolina Panthers, and he is well on his way to becoming one of the most recognized running backs in Panthers history, as well as NFL history, and to being placed among the list of great running backs of all time; and

Whereas, born March 1, 1974, in Spartanburg, Stephen Davis grew up in one of the town's toughest urban neighborhoods and began his football career playing Pop Warner football as a pulling offensive lineman who loved the physical nature of the game; and

Whereas, at Whitlock Junior High School, Mr. Davis switched to running back and broke numerous rushing records and gained notice from the coaches at Spartanburg High School. He immediately moved up to the Varsity football squad after his freshman year of high school where he amassed yards and touchdowns that were unparalleled in South Carolina at the time and won the nation's USA Today Offensive Player of the Year Award as a senior; and

Whereas, after high school Mr. Davis continued his football career at Auburn University where, in two years, as a starter, he became the school's fourth leading rusher trailing only former NFL greats Joe Cribbs, James Brooks, and Bo Jackson and tied third for career touchdowns; and

Whereas, the Washington Redskins drafted Mr. Davis in the fourth round of the NFL draft in 1996, and in 1999, he won the hearts of the Washington, D.C. fans as the feature back and also earned two Pro Bowl appearances; and

Whereas, since joining the Carolina Panthers, Mr. Davis has returned to his home crowd, playing every Sunday in Charlotte, only sixty miles away from his hometown of Spartanburg; and

Whereas, not only does Mr. Davis have the best rushing season for the Panthers, his involvement with the community off the football field will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy as well; and

Whereas, during Davis' 2002 season with the Washington Redskins, he and his foundation, Big Country Foundation, Inc. (BCF), sponsored Rushing for Remembrance (R4R) which partnered up with the Pentagon and their family crisis team to reach out to sixty families who lost a loved one on September 11, 2001; and

Whereas, this campaign provided game tickets to the surviving families and their children from the 9/11 Pentagon attacks to every home game, and the families were transported to and from the games by limousine, given sideline passes, fed, and brought up to visit with Mr. Davis and his family in his skybox after the game; and

Whereas, in addition, Mr. Davis raised scholarship money for each of the kids participating in R4R by inviting the public to donate any dollar amount for every yard that he rushed for in a single game or for the whole season; and

Whereas, now at Carolina, Mr. Davis and BCF use a similar fundraising tactic to sponsor the "Gaining Ground on Cancer" campaign to help fulfill the mission to educate, raise, and sustain awareness of breast and prostate cancer in underinsured and underserved communities by funding cancer research and promoting cancer education, screening, and treatment; and

Whereas, it is clear that Stephen Davis is not only a hero on the football field, but is a hero in the community as well, and South Carolina is more than proud to call him one of our own. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and memorialize Stephen Davis, NFL Running Back for the Carolina Panthers, for his achievements on the football field and in the community and extend to him best wishes in all of his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Stephen Davis of the Carolina Panthers Football Team.
