A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE MEMBERS OF THE 2003 CHESTERFIELD HIGH SCHOOL "RAMS" WRESTLING TEAM AND HEAD COACH LANCE ABERNATHY AND HIS STAFF FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WIN IN THE CLASS AA/A STATE WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITION.

Whereas, being a member of a sports team allows young people to have the opportunity to learn the skills of cooperation and teamwork while developing great athletic talents; and

Whereas, to become a champion in wrestling, all members of the team and the coaching staff must have outstanding leadership and physical abilities; and

Whereas, the Chesterfield High School "Rams" of Chesterfield County capped their thrilling 2003 wrestling season by taking the Class AA/A State title in a 34-30 victory over number one ranked Crescent High School to capture their first state title since 1963; and

Whereas, the overwhelming victory was a real team effort with David Michaud, wrestling on an injured left knee, bringing home a 6-2 victory over Chas Hayes of Crescent and Dan Hanna pinning Nick Horne, giving the "Rams" a commanding lead going into the final match; and

Whereas, with the help of Scott Parker and Da'Quan Ingram, the "Rams" got on board, trailing Crescent only 12-9 and without those crucial early points, the Chesterfield High wrestling team would have been unable to seal the victory in the final matches; and

Whereas, under the guidance and wisdom of Head Coach Lance Abernathy, the Chesterfield High School "Rams" proved that the win was a result of focusing on being at their best when it counts the most; and

Whereas, the members of this championship team include Jonathon Wilson, Evan Stepp, David Michaud, R. L. Stack, Matt Short, Danny Curtis, Patrick Vaughn, Marquist Merriman, Jay Gainey, Buddah Bridges, Nick Dixon, Chip Gilley, E. Z. Melton, Joe Bragg, Tony Moser, Steven James, Patrick Barefoot, Dan Hanna, Scott Parker, and Da'Quan Ingram; and

Whereas, this outstanding finish for the 2003 Chesterfield wrestling team that captured the first state championship in forty years has brought pride not only to Chesterfield High School, its administration, staff, alumni, students, and loyal fans, but also the members of Chesterfield County. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extend their congratulations to the members of the 2003 Chesterfield High School "Rams" Wrestling Team and Head Coach Lance Abernathy and his staff for their outstanding championship win in the Class AA/A State Wrestling Championship Competition.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the 2003 Chesterfield High School Football Team and Head Coach Lance Abernathy.
