A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE UPON THE DEATH OF MARINE PRIVATE NOLEN RYAN HUTCHINGS OF BOILING SPRINGS, SOUTH CAROLINA, ON SUNDAY, MARCH 23, 2003, AND CONVEY THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the Senate was deeply saddened to learn that Marine Private Nolen Ryan Hutchings, 20, of Boiling Springs died on Sunday, March 23, 2003; and

Whereas, Private Hutchings was killed in action while traveling with his armored vehicle unit fighting on the outskirts of An Nasiriyah and attempting to secure a bridge and help fellow wounded soldiers; and

Whereas, Private Hutchings was South Carolina's second reported casualty in the war against Iraq; and

Whereas, Private Hutchings was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; and

Whereas, Private Hutchings graduated from Boiling Springs High School in 2000 where upon graduation, he joined the Marines and quickly decided he would pursue a career in the military; and

Whereas, Private Hutchings bravely answered his country's call to arms in defense of world order and freedom by participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom with his unit from North Carolina; and

Whereas, family members say "he was proud to be a Marine" and that he "died for his country"; and
