A BILL

TO AMEND SECTION 59-1-430, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO SCHOOL MAKE-UP DAYS, SO AS TO FURTHER PROVIDE FOR THE PROCEDURES AND REQUIREMENTS TO MAKE UP DAYS LOST BECAUSE OF WEATHER OR OTHER DISRUPTIONS.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Section 59-1-430 of the 1976 Code is amended to read:

"Section 59-1-430.    Notwithstanding any other another provisions provision of law to the contrary, all school days missed because of snow, or extreme weather conditions, or other disruptions must be made up. A school district shall designate days within its school calendar to be used as make-up days. If the school district calendar does not contain sufficient make-up days, the local school board of trustees may lengthen the hours of school operation by no less than one hour each day for the total number of hours missed. A school operating on a four by four block schedule shall make up the time during the semester that days are missed if possible. A plan to make up days by lengthening the school day must be approved by the State Department of Education before its implementation. In meeting the requirements of Act 436 of 1982, no makeup Make-up days for students may must not be scheduled on Saturdays.; Provided, However, That except that remedial instruction for grades 7 through 12 may be taught on Saturday at the direction of the local school board."

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
