A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE PALMETTO STATE CLEAN FUELS COALITION AND ITS STAKEHOLDERS FOR WORKING TOGETHER TO INCREASE THE USE OF ALTERNATIVE FUELS IN SOUTH CAROLINA FOR IMPROVED AIR QUALITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.

Whereas, the United States Department of Energy's national Clean Cities program promotes voluntary partnerships to advance the use of alternative fuel vehicles and cleaner burning alternative fuels; and

Whereas, the Palmetto State Clean Fuels Coalition is the newest coalition to be designated in the United States, becoming only the 82nd officially designated Clean Cities Coalition in the nation; and

Whereas, the Palmetto State Clean Fuels Coalition covers a nine-county area in South Carolina that includes Aiken, Fairfield, Lexington, Newberry, Richland, Chester, Lancaster, Union, and York; and

Whereas, Palmetto State Clean Fuels Coalition stakeholders currently operate more than twelve hundred alternative fuel vehicles in the nine-county area; and

Whereas, those vehicles consumed more than 150,000 gallons of alternative fuel in that nine-county area in 2003, including ethanol, biodiesel, propane, and compressed natural gas; and

Whereas, the production of alternative fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel in South Carolina holds out the potential for this State to create new jobs and commercial opportunities; and

Whereas, alternative fuels are cleaner burning and their widespread use would help improve air quality in the State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commends and honors the Palmetto State Clean Fuels Coalition and its stakeholders for their achievement and commitment to expanding the use of alternative fuels to promote improved air quality and economic development.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the coalition and its stakeholders.
