A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE AIKEN COUNTY ROBOTICS TEAM ON WINNING THE 2006 ENGINEERING INSPIRATION AWARD, HONORING THEIR COMMITMENT AND DEDICATION TO ENGINEERING AND CREATIVITY, AND WISHING THEM MUCH SUCCESS IN THE FUTURE.

Whereas, Team 1102, Aiken Magic, is the Aiken County Robotics Team involved in For Inspiration and Recognition of Science Team (FIRST) Robotics; and

Whereas, the team, established in 2003 and led by team advisor Patrick O'Neill, brings together the talents of parents, students, and industries to teach students about science, math, business, and technology and inspire them to pursue challenging careers; and

Whereas, Aiken Magic is a student run venture, involving more than forty students from various Aiken Country schools and twenty adult volunteers; and

Whereas, each year the team builds new robots and competes in strategic games as a way to learn how to solve real world problems and learn about innovation and engineering; and

Whereas, 100 percent of its seniors go on to college and fifty percent of them choose engineering or other technical fields as their major; and

Whereas, more than building robots, team members are involved in all aspects of business, from publicity, marketing, and video production to web design, scrap booking, and computer animation; and

Whereas, Aiken Magic has been fortunate enough to receive community support form a broad range of sponsors including local businesses, schools, parents, and mentors; and

Whereas, the team also encourages other schools in Aiken County and across South Carolina to establish robotics teams and helps raise funds for cancer awareness, adult education, and veterans groups; and

Whereas, in the first year, Aiken Magic was named the Rookie All-Star Team and has since gone on to win various awards every year including, 2004 Peachtree Regional Semi-Finalist, 2005 Peachtree Regional Finalist, 2005 Palmetto Regional Website Award Winner, and FIRST's 2005 and 2006 Engineering Inspiration Award; and

Whereas, the award is given for outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering and engineers, both within the school and the community, by recruiting students to engineering and conducting significant community outreach programs. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, congratulate the Aiken County Robotics team on winning the 2006 Engineering Inspiration Award, honor their commitment and dedication to engineering and creativity, and wish them much success in the future.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to team advisor Patrick O'Neill and the many dedicated students on the Aiken County Robotics Team.
