A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MR. LEWIS E. HICKS OF COLUMBIA ON THE OCCASION OF HIS NINETIETH BIRTHDAY ON APRIL 17, 2006, AND TO WISH HIM A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MANY MORE YEARS OF HEALTH, HAPPINESS, AND JOY.

Whereas, the members of the Senate are very pleased to learn that Mr. Lewis English Hicks of Columbia will celebrate his ninetieth birthday on April 17, 2006; and

Whereas, Lewis Hicks was born in Sumter and is the fourth of seven children born to Charles Wheeler Hicks and Evelyn Buford Wallace Hicks; and

Whereas, he retired from Maxwell Brothers Furniture Company as vice president and general manager of the Columbia region after forty-six years of service. He is also a Mason and served his country in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific; and

Whereas, this delightful man married his childhood sweetheart, Inez, on June 15, 1940, at Incarnation Lutheran Church in Columbia, where her family were members. Mr. and Mrs. Hicks are the proud parents of two wonderful children, Susan H. Edwards and Charles D. Hicks. Susan is the assistant bill and ratification clerk for the South Carolina Senate. Mr. and Mrs. Hicks also are the proud grandparents of five loving grandchildren consisting of Susan's son and daughter and Charles' three daughters; and

Whereas, Lewis Hicks has been a very active member of the Incarnation Lutheran Church since 1940. He has served in many capacities including several terms as councilman and on various committees. He is a charter member of the Couples Sunday School Class, a member and former president of the Lutheran Men of the Church, and served several terms as president of the Happy Wanderers; and

Whereas, in addition to his faithful work with Incarnation Lutheran Church, this amazing nonagenarian is also a voracious reader and an avid fisherman, and he has shared these wonderful pastimes with his children and grandchildren; and

Whereas, he is a truly amazing person of courage and conviction who has devoted his life to his church, family, and community and who, throughout his life has been sustained by the power of prayer and faith; and

Whereas, above all else he has always been a loving and giving son, father, grandfather, and brother as well as a loving and devoted husband to his beloved wife, Inez, of sixty-six years; and

Whereas, when family and friends gather to celebrate his ninetieth birthday, the celebration will reflect on and honor his life which embodies the American tradition of faith, hard work, and accomplishment; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the members of the South Carolina Senate pause to reflect on the rich life of Lewis English Hicks and join with his family members and many friends in wishing him a most happy birthday. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate congratulate Mr. Lewis E. Hicks of Columbia on the occasion of his ninetieth birthday on April 17, 2006, and to wish him a joyous birthday celebration and many more years of health, happiness, and joy.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Hicks.
