TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MRS. LUCILLE HALLMAN HOLMAN OF COLUMBIA, ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE-HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HER FOR CONTINUED GOOD HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly where delighted to learn that Mrs. Lucille Hallman Holman of Columbia will celebrate her one-hundredth birthday on February 14, 2005; and
Whereas, Mrs. Holman, born in Leesville, South Carolina, was the seventh child born to the late Dan and Mattie Hallman; and
Whereas, as a girl Mrs. Holman attended school near Leesville and subsequently graduated from Betties Academy; she continued her education at Benedict College where she met her future husband, Lewis W. Holman, a student at Allen University; and
Whereas, she and Mr. Holman married in 1927, and to this happy union was born one son, the late Lewis W. Holman II; and
Whereas, Mrs. Holman was introduced to the church as a child and has selflessly served the African Methodist Episcopal (A. M. E.) Church for decades, devotedly giving of her time and talents; and
Whereas, in 1930, she joined Chappelle Station and was appointed to Stewardess Board E, faithfully serving for sixty-four years; and
Whereas, also in 1930, Mrs. Holman began working with the Missionary Society of the A. M. E. Church and served as president of the society for fifty-seven years; she also served as Director of the Young People's Division and as the Columbia Conference Director for twenty years; she organized a widow's club and still attends the Quadrennial Conventions of the Women's Missionary Society of the A. M. E. Church; and
Whereas, in recognition of her lifetime of loyal service and devotion to the church, Mrs. Holman was named Woman of the Year by Chappelle Memorial A. M. E. Church in 1995, and also was selected Mother of the Church; and
Whereas, among Mrs. Holman's lifetime of myriad volunteer activities are her membership on the Allen University Board of Trustees and her service as President and Treasurer of the Zoie Social Club; she has also been recognized by the Columbia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority which in 2000 presented her with the Golden Years Award; and
Whereas, later in life, the Lord gave Mrs. Holman the job of raising five grandchildren after the death of her son, and though not an easy task, with an abundance of love and wisdom, she proudly provided for their spiritual and physical needs, guiding each of them into adulthood; and
Whereas, in addition to her five grandchildren, she is the beloved matriarch to thirteen great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; and
Whereas, over the course of Mrs. Holman's full and wonderful life, not only has she seen incredible changes and developments, but she made her own special and significant mark every step of the way, contributing in countless ways to the life of her church, her family, and her community; and
Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the South Carolina General Assembly to pause in their deliberations to recognize this remarkable milestone in the life of so distinguished a daughter of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Mrs. Lucille Hallman Holman of Columbia, on the occasion of her one-hundredth birthday and extend best wishes to her for continued good health and happiness.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Lucille Hallman Holman.
