A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY "BULLDOGS" 2004 FOOTBALL TEAM OF ORANGEBURG COUNTY FOR ITS SUCCESSFUL SEASON, CULMINATING IN RANKINGS IN THE TOP 25 DIVISION I-AA TEAMS BY THE SPORTS NETWORK AND USA TODAY/ESPN, AND HONORING THE PLAYERS AND HEAD COACH BUDDY POUGH.

Whereas, the 2004 version of South Carolina State "Bulldogs" compiled a record of nine wins and two losses, the best season for the team since 1994; and

Whereas, the "Bulldogs" finished six and one in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and captured a share of the league championship, the University's first conference football title in ten seasons; and

Whereas, South Carolina State won three Classic games, defeating Benedict in the Palmetto Capital City Classic, Tennessee State in the Circle City Classic, and North Carolina A&T in the Rivalry Classic; and

Whereas, the "Bulldogs" ended the season ranked number two in the final polls of both the Sheridan Broadcasting network and the American Sports Wire; and

Whereas, Head Coach Buddy Pough's team earned a Top 25 Division I-AA poll final ranking from both The Sports Network and USA Today/ESPN; and

Whereas, South Carolina State led the MEAC in seven statistical categories: rushing, offense, punting, sacks, least penalty yards, fewest sacks allowed, time of possession, and kickoff coverage; and

Whereas, a number of individual players were recognized as MVPs and Players of the Week during the season, and running back DeShawn Baker raced for more than one thousand yards; and

Whereas, this outstanding finish for the South Carolina State University football team signifies that the "Bulldogs" are truly a power program in South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved, that the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, the Senate concurring, do hereby congratulate the South Carolina State University football team of Orangeburg County on their 2004 Top 25 rankings and 9-2 season.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the South Carolina State University Athletic Director.
