EXPRESSING THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AT THE DEATH OF CORRIN FITTS BOWERS OF HAMPTON COUNTY AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, Corrin Fitts Bowers of Hampton County died on February 22, 2006, at the age of seventy-seven; and

Whereas, Mr. Bowers was born on July 5, 1928 in Luray, South Carolina, the son of Grover Ford Bowers and Corrine Fitts Bowers; and

Whereas, he attended schools in the towns of Luray and Estill and graduated from high school in 1945; and

Whereas, he attended both the University of South Carolina and Newberry College and was the owner of the hat that became the Bronze Derby-Newberry and Presbyterian Colleges' much coveted sports trophy; and

Whereas, Mr. Bowers was a lifelong farmer who served for many years on the Production Credit Board in the Town of Walterboro. He also served as a member of Hampton County's ASCA as well as the State Board under President Jimmy Carter; and

Whereas, in Estill, Mr. Bowers was the Democratic Committee Chairman for ten years, served as the first president of the Estill Jaycees, was Co-Chairman of the 1964 Watermelon Festival, a charter member of the Monday Night Couple's Bridge Club, and a member of the Estill Supper Club and the Estill Lions Club; and

Whereas, he was instrumental in bringing astronauts Gus Grisson and Ed Young to Estill on Mendel Rivers' Day; and

Whereas, Mr. Bowers was one of the founders of Patrick Henry Academy, served as its first temporary chairman and remained a trustee until his death; and

Whereas, he was a member of the Lawtonville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for fifty years, sang bass in the church choir, taught Sunday School and was chairman of the Building Committee on several occasions; and

Whereas, Mr. Bowers is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-six years, Mary Eleanor Wiggins Bowers, a son Corrin Fitts Bowers, Jr., daughters, Sharon Bowers Green, Liz Bowers Palles, and Graham Bowers Solana, a brother, Grover Ford Bowers, eleven grandchildren, two great-grandsons, and a host of other relatives and friends; and

Whereas, we want Mr. Bowers' family and his many friends to know that he is in our thoughts and they have our deepest sympathy. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express sorrow at the death of Mr. Corrin Fitts Bowers of Hampton County and extend sympathy to his family and his many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Bowers.
