VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR SUSAN AUDE, FORMER ANCHOR OF WIS NEWS, FOR HER OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FIELD OF BROADCAST JOURNALISM AND TO THE LIVES OF ALL SOUTH CAROLINIANS, AND TO WISH HER ALL THE BEST UPON HER RETIREMENT.
Whereas, in a business known for frequent personnel changes, Susan Aude has been at WIS Television since 1978, quickly finding her way into viewers' hearts and minds and establishing herself as a main staple in South Carolina broadcast journalism; and
Whereas, starting out as a general assignment reporter and weekend weather reporter, Susan soon became anchor of the station's news broadcast in 1982. Her warm smile and obvious passion in relaying the news made her a local celebrity and helped WIS News gain the credibility and trustworthiness that it enjoys today; and
Whereas, covering many important and sometimes controversial happenings in South Carolina throughout her career, Susan is known for delivering the news with great compassion, mindful that there are always two sides to every story; and
Whereas, receiving dozens of honors for her work both as an anchor and as a reporter, Susan was named Newscaster of the Year from the South Carolina Broadcasters Association, and recently received the Master's Award from the same organization; and
Whereas, in 1998, she was named to the University of South Carolina College of Journalism's "Diamond Circle", joining a national group of esteemed individuals chosen for outstanding contributions to their field, and was honored in 2001 with the Governor's Commission on Women "Woman of Achievement Award" for remarkable accomplishments and commitment to our State; and
Whereas, Susan's professional achievements are all the more profound because she was paralyzed in an automobile accident during her junior year at Erskine College. Refusing to let her disability get the better of her, Susan went on to finish her college education after a year of hospitalization and rehabilitation and subsequently earned a Master's of Mass Communications degree from the University of South Carolina; and
Whereas, her inspiring life and accomplishments have been the subject of stories in magazines, as well as on CNN and Lifetime cable channels. Among her proudest moments was bearing the Olympic Torch as it passed through Columbia in 1996; and
Whereas, active within her immediate community, Susan has received numerous humanitarian awards and is a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer, member of the Community Relations Council Lunch Club of Columbia, and is a frequently requested speaker at community events; and
Whereas, Susan has made an indelible impact on WIS News. She has shown great grace, honor, and dignity in her commitment to honest and fair reporting, and she will be sorely missed in the homes of countless South Carolinians in the years to come. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Susan Aude, former anchor of WIS News, for her outstanding contributions to the field of broadcast journalism and to the lives of all South Carolinians, and wish her all the best upon her retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Susan Aude.
