VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO HONOR CHARLES HENRY NICHOLAS, JR. AND GAIL LONG NICHOLAS OF GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA, FOR THEIR LONG-TERM DEDICATION TO THE EDUCATIONAL PROFESSION AND TO COMMEND THEM ON THEIR INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO BOB JONES ACADEMY.
Whereas, it is appropriate for the South Carolina General Assembly to recognize individuals who unselfishly dedicate their time, talents, and energy for the benefit of the State's most precious resource - our youth; and
Whereas, there are none more deserving of this special recognition than Chuck and Gail Nicholas of Greenville, South Carolina; and
Whereas, born on a United States military base in Newfoundland, Canada, Mr. Nicholas graduated from Bob Jones University with a B.S. in Speech Education in 1978 and obtained his M.A. in Interpretive Speech two years later; and
Whereas, born in Greenville, Mrs. Nicholas graduated from Bob Jones University with a B.S. in Social Studies Education in 1980 and obtained her M.Ed. in Teaching History two years later; and
Whereas, these talented and dedicated educators have devoted their entire professional lives to Bob Jones University and Bob Jones Academy. They have both taught at these prestigious institutions for twenty-five years; and
Whereas, Mr. Nicholas currently teaches Speech, Debate, and Drama, and Mrs. Nicholas teaches American Government and is the Social Studies Department Chairman; and
Whereas, the couple have also served with great enthusiasm as Forensic Team Coaches since April of 1985 when Bob Jones Academy joined the National Forensic League; and
Whereas, serving in this capacity, they have brought home many honors including winning the District Sweepstakes in 1988, 1989, 2003, and 2004, the team was a two-time NFL Leading Chapter in South Carolina, a three-time NFL Trophy Point Leader, and forty-two students qualified to NFL Nationals with twelve national placements/trophies. They also are proud to boast numerous state championships and 2A state champions; and
Whereas, Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas have served in numerous leadership capacities in the NFL and both have been honored three times with Distinguished Service recognition by the NFL. Mr. Nicholas received his third Distinguished Service recognition in 2003 and was one of only 19 recognized in the 80-year history of the NFL while Mrs. Nicholas received her third Distinguished Service recognition in 2006 and was one of only 24 recognized in the 80-year history of the NFL; and
Whereas, they both received the honor of being named Triple Diamond Coach representing over fifteen years of coaching over 60,000 student NFL points, both served as South Carolina District Chair, both are members of the Burford Hall of Fame, both were the Champion Coaches for Storytelling at the NFL Nationals, and both were named 2005 SCFCA Coach of the Year; and
Whereas, additionally, Mr. Nicholas was also the 2003 Champion Coach for Extemp Commentary, NFL Nationals, and is the Mock Trial Team Founder and Head Coach. Under Mr. Nicholas' tutelage, the Mock Trial Team was able to achieve the status of State Champions in 1990, 1995, 2001, 2003, and 2004; and
Whereas, additionally, Mrs. Nicholas served as Vice President of the South Carolina Forensic Coaches Association in 1992, is the creator and webmaster of the South Carolina Speech and Debate website used by all schools involved in speech and debate in South Carolina and North Carolina, and was the 2005 NFL District Chair Communicator of the Year; and
Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the members of the South Carolina General Assembly pause to acknowledge the many and varied contributions that both Chuck and Gail Nicholas have so unselfishly given to Bob Jones University and Bob Jones Academy over the last twenty-five years and to thank them for their dedication to the youth of the State as they have no doubt touched the lives and hearts of countless numbers of their students over their respective careers. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor Charles Henry Nicholas, Jr. and Gail Long Nicholas of Greenville, South Carolina, for their long-term dedication to the educational profession and to commend them on their individual contributions to Bob Jones Academy.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Chuck and Gail Nicholas of Greenville, South Carolina.
