VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO HONOR WELLAND BURNSIDE OF HORRY COUNTY FOR HIS OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIS COMMUNITY IN VOLUNTEERISM, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM FOR RECEIVING A PRESTIGIOUS PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD IN RECOGNITION OF THE WORK HE HAS DONE IN BENEFITING THE LIVES OF OTHERS.
Whereas, Welland Burnside of Garden City has brought great pride to his family and community in achieving national recognition for exemplary volunteer service by receiving a 2006 Prudential Spirit of Community Award; and
Whereas, this impressive award, presented by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, honors young volunteers across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving their communities; and
Whereas, Welland earned this award by generously giving of his time and energy in numerous capacities, always considering others' needs before his own; and
Whereas, upon the death of a close friend, Welland resolved to turn his grief into positive action as he collected more than 175,000 stuffed animals to place on his friend's gravesite on his birthday. The toys were then donated to local police stations to distribute to traumatized children around the world; and
Whereas, in the years to follow, Welland established an annual "birthday" drive, has conducted many fundraisers, and has expanded his project's reach to thirty-seven states; and
Whereas, the success of the State of South Carolina, the strength of our individual communities, and the overall vitality of our nation depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of young people like Welland Burnside who use their considerable talents and resources to serve others. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor Welland Burnside of Horry County for his outstanding contributions to his community in volunteerism, and congratulate him for receiving a prestigious Prudential Spirit of Community Award in recognition of the work he has done in benefiting the lives of others.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Welland Burnside.
