A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE AND EXTEND VERY BEST WISHES TO MRS. EMMA ANGELINE HARRIS BUTLER OF EASTOVER, SOUTH CAROLINA, ON NINETY-THREE YEARS OF A FULL AND WONDERFUL LIFE AND TO WISH HER CONTINUED GOOD HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are delighted to learn that Mrs. Emma Angeline Harris Butler of Eastover has celebrated ninety-three years of a very full, loving, and productive life; and

Whereas, Mrs. Butler, born in 1913 to the late Sam and Alice Harris, grew up in Lower Richland County on the family farm, one of many children who lived, worked, and played together in a large, loving family; and

Whereas, she was the beloved wife of the late Reverend Isaac Bartley Butler, a school principal and teacher, and together they raised, and through great sacrifice educated, six daughters: Angeline, Mary Walker, Delores Hardy, Aretha Pigford, Mildred Elaine Shirley, and Emma Margaret Butler; and

Whereas, in addition to raising her family and working alongside her children on their Butler farm picking cotton, Mrs. Butler had a very long and distinguished career as an educator; and

Whereas, from 1934 to 1939 she was the principal and a teacher in the one room Gum Springs School, where she began her career in education earning twenty-five dollars a month; she went on to teach for thirty years at Crossroads School in Eastover and for an additional six years at Gadsden Elementary School; and

Whereas, Mrs. Butler, a leader and activist in the community, has given of her time and talents to many causes and organizations, including serving as Secretary of the Richland County Teacher's Association for fifteen years, as Secretary of the Gethsemane Missionary Congress for twenty years, and as Secretary of the South Carolina Farm Bureau for fifteen years; and

Whereas, over the course of her life, Mrs. Butler has witnessed immense social change, and she is a great advocate for continued growth and equality for all, with a special interest in protecting and advancing the voting rights of all Americans; and

Whereas, Mrs. Butler is not only a protector of the rights of all, but she also attends to the needs of all, having founded "Emma Butler's Tents", a Christian-based community organization helping families in need, including providing college scholarships; and

Whereas, throughout her full and abundant life, Mrs. Butler also has found time to perfect her creative gifts and is an accomplished seamstress, quilter, and cook, having made beautiful clothes for her six daughters, head-turning hats, and wonderful accessories for her home; and

Whereas, Mrs. Butler is truly a woman of many talents, a faithful servant of her church, and the adored matriarch of her family; and

Whereas, as we approach Mother's Day, it is with great pleasure that the members of the House of Representatives pause in their deliberations to extend good wishes to one of South Carolina's beloved mothers and distinguished daughters, Mrs. Emma Angeline Harris Butler. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate and extend very best wishes to Mrs. Emma Angeline Harris Butler of Eastover, South Carolina, on ninety-three years of a full and wonderful life and wish her continued good health and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Emma Angeline Harris Butler.
