TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA UPON THE PASSING OF MRS. JOAN CAROLYN HIGHTOWER LEWIS, AND TO OFFER HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly were deeply saddened by the news of the death of Mrs. Joan Carolyn Hightower Lewis on December 19, 2005; and

Whereas, born on May 9, 1947 to her proud parents, Wilbur and Florence Caroline Caughman Hightower, she grew into a true southern lady, always abiding by her beliefs and ways of the feminine world; and

Whereas, a University of South Carolina graduate, she received an undergraduate degree in History and a Masters Degree in Education; and

Whereas, her courtship and romance with Robert Otis Lewis led to their marriage on October 20, 1968. Together, the couple traveled with the Air Force for three years before returning to Columbia, where Mrs. Lewis continued her career as an educator at Airport High School; and

Whereas, a devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Lewis adored her husband, two daughters, Joanna Livingston Lewis Hiller and Caroline Jordan Lewis, and three grandchildren, Mary-Jordan Tyler, Eliza Livingston, and Richard West Hiller III; and

Whereas, in 1978, Mrs. Lewis and friend Karen Outlaw Mixon opened the Santee Shoppe which set a new standard for unique specialty boutiques in Columbia. The shop is still frequented daily by many customers and is run by Mrs. Lewis' two loving daughters; and

Whereas, giving tirelessly of herself in benefit of her community, Mrs. Lewis was an avid supporter of cancer research and advocacy and served on the Board of Palmetto Richland Children's Hospital and on the Board of Palmetto Health Center for Cancer Treatment and Research; and

Whereas, Mrs. Lewis is survived by her loving husband, daughters, and grandchildren, her father and his wife, her aunt and uncle, and many nieces and nephews; and

Whereas, Mrs. Lewis' courageous battle with cancer inspired countless South Carolinians, as through it all she remained the poised, strong, loving woman she has always been. Though her family and community still grieve their loss, her grace and compassion live on in the hearts and minds of everyone fortunate enough to have known her. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Mrs. Joan Carolyn Hightower Lewis, and offer her family and many friends their deepest sympathy.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Robert Otis Lewis.
