A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES TO REAUTHORIZE THE HOBBS ACT TO PROTECT WORKERS FROM UNION VIOLENCE.

Whereas, every American has the right to expect a workplace free of violence; and

Whereas, some labor unions have resorted to violence, bribery, and extortion in their workplace unionization campaigns; and

Whereas, this violence has not only confined itself to the workplace, but has spilled over into other areas of American civic life including political campaigns; and

Whereas, the people have a constitutional right to expect their free speech exercises to be respected by their fellow citizens and protected by law; and

Whereas, Congress has in the past sought to restrict union violence via the Hobbs Act, which was thrown out by the courts. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution request the Congress of the United States to reauthorize the Hobbs Act to protect workers from union violence.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the United States Senate, the United States House of Representatives, and to each member of the South Carolina Congressional Delegation.
