TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA UPON THE DEATH OF LANCE CORPORAL JOSHUA L. TORRENCE, OF LEXINGTON COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Lance Corporal Joshua L. Torrence, at age twenty-one, on Monday, March 14, 2005. At the time of his death, Lance Corporal Torrence was bravely serving his country in combat in Iraq's western province of Al Anbar; and
Whereas, raised in Lexington County, he was the beloved son of Vernon and Regina Torrence and the devoted brother of Vanessa and Raquel Torrence; and
Whereas, his unit arrived in Iraq in September and was to return soon to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; and
Whereas, a Civil War re-enactor and an avid four-wheel drive enthusiast, Joshua Torrence joined the Marines in 2003 and completed basic training at Parris Island; and
Whereas, he was proud to be assigned to the Amphibian Battalion where he was one of three crewmen on an amphibious assault vehicle; and
Whereas, a 2003 graduate of White Knoll High School, Joshua Torrence was an outstanding football player playing offensive tackle on the varsity football team and serving as a game captain during his senior season; and
Whereas, he is described as the ultimate team player who always gave his best and who chose to enter the military to be a part of America's team and help out his country; and
Whereas, Joshua Torrence earned the respect of all who knew him. He knew when he joined the Marines that there was a good chance he would go to Iraq and yet he went willingly, knowing it was part of his job; and
Whereas, it is with honor that the South Carolina Senate pauses to reflect on the life of Lance Corporal Joshua L. Torrence, to recognize the ultimate sacrifice made by this courageous young man on behalf of our country, and to extend to his family and friends deepest sympathy on the loss of this great son of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Lance Corporal Joshua L. Torrence, of Lexington County, and to extend their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Lance Corporal Joshua L. Torrence.
