A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE SORROW OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATE SENATE AND TO HONOR THE MEMORY OF THE LATE STEVEN W. BAGBY, FORKLIFT OPERATOR AT THE GREGG PLANT OF AVONDALE MILLS IN AIKEN COUNTY, WHO LOST HIS LIFE AS A RESULT OF THE CATASTROPHIC TRAIN DERAILMENT ON JANUARY 6, 2005.

Whereas, the late Steven W. Bagby, an Augusta, Georgia resident, died January 6, 2005, in the aftermath of the deadly chlorine release from a car ruptured by the train crash at Avondale Mills in Aiken County; and

Whereas, the cheerful forklift operator was well known and well liked by his Gregg Plant colleagues, with a reputation for his big smile and hard work; and

Whereas, in only two years on the job, the native of Germany was a vital part of the plant's third-shift operation; and

Whereas, the avid fisherman and hunter had, only ten days before his death, found a new source of joy -- as the father of a baby boy, Steven Wayne Bagby, Jr.; and

Whereas, Bagby is survived by Marie Schooler, the baby's mother; his father, Samuel A. Bagby, Sr.; a brother and sister; and nieces and nephews; and

Whereas, he is also survived by his friends and colleagues at the Gregg Plant of Avondale Mills and by the people of his community and his State, all of whom will miss his big smile and mourn for the loss of his future. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina State Senate express their sorrow and honor the memory of the late Steven W. Bagby, forklift operator at the Gregg Plant of Avondale Mills in Aiken County, who lost his life as a result of the catastrophic train derailment on January 6, 2005.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his family.
