A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE RECENTLY COMPLETED INTERCHANGE LOCATED AT THE INTERSECTION OF UNITED STATES HIGHWAYS 52 AND 78 IN THE CITY OF NORTH CHARLESTON "THE ANTLERS INTERCHANGE" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THE INTERCHANGE THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS "THE ANTLERS INTERCHANGE".

Whereas, the Department of Transportation recently completed construction of a new highway interchange in the City of North Charleston located at United States Highways 52 and 78; and

Whereas, the newly constructed interchange is adjacent to the Deer Park residential neighborhoods; and

Whereas, the intersection of United States Highways 52 and 78 for many years was locally known as "The Antlers" because to the eye of the local rural landowners and farmers it resembled the prong of a deer antler; and

Whereas, a 1946 plat of the twenty-six tracts of land (the Fernwood to Dantzler corridor) owned by Louis E. Storen and John D. Bable in Deer Park, recorded in the RMC Office for Charleston County in Plat Book F, page 237, describes the location of the tracts as "Near the Antlers, Charleston, South Carolina"; and

Whereas, the present-day Deer Park subdivision was so named because of the proximity to the intersection locally know as "The Antlers"; and

Whereas, streets in present-day Deer Park subdivision, such as Antler Drive, Fawn Street, Doe Street, Twisted Antler Drive, and Buckfield Drive were so named because of their proximity to the intersection locally know as "The Antlers"; and

Whereas, in building the interchange many "Grand Oaks" with over forty inches in diameter at breast height were lost; and

Whereas, the Deer Park communities have suffered the loss of this adjacent forest and its wildlife; and

Whereas, the residents of the Deer Park communities desire to preserve some of its history and have that history memorialized permanently. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the recently completed interchange located at the intersection of United States Highways 52 and 78 in the City of North Charleston "The Antlers Interchange" and erect appropriate markers or signs at the interchange that contain the words "The Antlers Interchange".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
