A BILL

TO AMEND ACT 778 OF 1988, AS AMENDED, RELATING TO THE CREATION OF THE REGISTRATION AND ELECTIONS COMMISSION FOR LAURENS COUNTY, SO AS TO INCREASE THE COMMISSION FROM NINE TO ELEVEN MEMBERS AND STAGGER TERMS OF THE NEW MEMBERS.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Section 1 of Act 778 of 1988, as last amended by Act 444 of 2002, is further amended to read:

"Section    1.    There is created the Registration and Elections Commission for Laurens County. There are nine eleven members of the commission who must be appointed by a majority of the Laurens County Legislative Delegation, including the Senator, who are appointed for terms of four years and until their successors are appointed and qualify, except that of those appointed in 2005, four five must be appointed for terms of two years each and the remaining five six members for terms of four years each. At the expiration of those members appointed for terms of two years, successors to those members must be appointed for terms of four years. Vacancies on the commission may be filled by appointment in the manner of original appointment for the unexpired terms only. The members of the commission shall receive compensation as appropriated by the county council."

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
