A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE CLERGY AND CONGREGANTS OF THE SECOND CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH OF RICHLAND COUNTY FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING FAITH AND TO WISH THEM ALL THE BEST UPON THEIR MOVE TO A NEW LOCATION ON APRIL 9, 2006.

Whereas, celebrating a rich and blessed history, Second Calvary Baptist Church began informal organization in 1853, in the basement of Mrs. Celia Mann's home under the leadership of Reverend C. H. Corley and Reverend Wilson Carr of Charleston; and

Whereas, in the turbulence that followed Emancipation in 1865 and the Reconstruction Period, members became scattered, but reconvened in February 1889 at the home of George and Sarah Hull. They were led by Dr. William C. Lindsay, Pastor of the First Baptist Church for whites, and purchased land on Bull Street from the Holmes family, dedicating the church on May 30, 1891; and

Whereas, always faithful to raising money for buildings in which to worship, congregants began a building program to finance the construction of a new church in 1956. A new sanctuary was built in 1964, and new pews were installed in 1972; and

Whereas, placed on the Faith Heritage Tours list in 1976, the church celebrated its one hundredth anniversary on February 26, 1989; and

Whereas, in 2002, the church embarked on a process that resulted in the sale of the former church, and in construction of a new church on Mason Road in Columbia; and

Whereas, after several years of planning, prayer, and stewardship, the clergy and congregants of Second Calvary Baptist Church will open the doors to their new church on April 9, 2006. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly recognize and honor the clergy and congregants of Second Calvary Baptist Church of Richland County for their outstanding faith and wish them all the best upon their move to a new location on April 9, 2006.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Reverend John N. Osborne, Jr., of Second Calvary Baptist Church.
