A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 219 IN NEWBERRY COUNTY FROM OXNER ROAD (ROAD S-36-611) TO UNITED STATES HIGHWAY 176 AS "JERRY ALEWINE MEMORIAL HIGHWAY" IN MEMORY OF JERRY M. ALEWINE, WHO SERVED THE COUNTY OF NEWBERRY AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA WITH DISTINCTION AS A MEMBER OF THE NEWBERRY COUNTY COUNCIL, AS BOARD CHAIRMAN OF THE NEWBERRY COUNTY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, AND AS A MEMBER OF THE NEWBERRY COUNTY TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE AND TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO ERECT APPROPRIATE SIGNS OR MARKERS REFLECTING THIS DESIGNATION.

Whereas, Jerry M. Alewine was elected to the Newberry County Council representing District Three in November, 2002, and served with distinction as a county council member from January, 2003, until his untimely death on August 12, 2003; and

Whereas, Jerry M. Alewine was dedicated and committed to the County of Newberry and its citizens, having served as board chairman of the Newberry County Memorial Hospital, as a member of the Newberry County Transportation Committee, and as a member of the Saint Philips Fire Department; and

Whereas, the professional career of Jerry M. Alewine was dedicated to providing modern, high quality roadways to the citizens of South Carolina inasmuch as he was a longtime public official of the South Carolina Highway Department from which he retired. He was later employed by Vulcan Materials and was also the owner of J. J. Line Striping; and

Whereas, Jerry M. Alewine graduated from Newberry College in 1960 and served as a member of the Newberry College Alumni Association and the Newberry College Indian Club; and

Whereas, Jerry M. Alewine was a lifelong member of Saint Philips Lutheran Church where he served on the church council, was a former Sunday School superintendent, and a former church financial secretary; and

Whereas, he was devoted to his lovely wife, the former Eleanor Amick, and they were blessed with two children, Nancy Alewine Stoudemire and Jerry Amick Alewine, and one grandchild, Ryan Joseph Stoudemire; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper that the portion of South Carolina Highway 219 in Newberry County from Oxner Road (Road S-36-611) to United States Highway 176 be named "Jerry Alewine Memorial Highway" in memory of Jerry M. Alewine. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of South Carolina Highway 219 in Newberry County from Oxner Road (Road S-36-611) to United States Highway 176 as "Jerry Alewine Memorial Highway" in memory of Jerry M. Alewine, who served the County of Newberry and the State of South Carolina with distinction as a member of the Newberry County Council, as board chairman of the Newberry County Memorial Hospital, and as a member of the Newberry County Transportation Committee and further request the Department of Transportation to erect appropriate signs or markers reflecting this designation.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his widow, Mrs. Eleanor Amick Alewine, and to the Department of Transportation.
